Village pub re-opens after massive refurb
b12-173 L-R Business partnersTerry Stewart and Graham Roe have re-opened the Knife & Cleaver pub in Houghton Conquest.
A VILLAGE pub that has lain empty for over a year has had a new lease of life after more than £500,000 was ivested in it.
The Knife & Cleaver in Houghton Conquest, is now up and running again after it was bought by Charles Wells, just over a year ago.
The pub is being run by business partners Graham Roe and Terry Stewart, who have been working with the company on the major refurbishment.
The pair have spent the past 13 years in France and moved back to the UK to run their own pub using ideas they had picked up overseas.
Graham, 61, said: “We’re really happy with the way the pub is looking now. A lot of hard work has gone into it, but now we are open it has all been worth it.
“We have been running pubs, bars and restaurants for years, and I was nominated for Innkeeper of the Year for one of our pubs in Suffolk, so we have a lot of experience.
“We have bought in five very talented chefs and we do a different lunchtime menu every day called the Table d’Hôte. This is something we picked up in France and it is a set price menu that includes a choice of about four or five starters, main courses and deserts.
“We have a very big emphasis on fresh food, everything is homemade and sourced locally.
“We’ve been open for a couple of weeks now, and have had really good feedback so far. We’re really looking forward to serving the people of Bedfordshire.”
The Knife & Cleaver has undergone a £500,000 extension, refurbishment and restoration project.
Along with the stylishly redecorated and extended interior, inspired by the rural pub setting which sits alongside the historic village church, the pub now boasts a converted stable block comprising of eight self-contained king size and twin, en-suite rooms.
Graham and Terry have also put together a calendar of regular events aiming for the watering hole to once again become “the friendly local village pub” offering food and a variety of cask ales, with a great atmosphere.
