A UNIVERSITY professor has developed a new way of harnessing energy to make batteries a thing of the past which is seen to be a world first.
Professor Ben Allen, from the University of Bedfordshire, has discovered a method of using waste energy from radio waves to produce energy that could be used in everyday gadgets such as clocks and remote controls.
He started the project in October 2010 and has been working with his team, lecturer David Jazani and Dr Tahima Ajmal, at the centre for wireless research at the university.
Professor Allen said: “The emerging area of power harvesting technology promises to reduce our reliance on conventional batteries.
“Our next stage is to try and raise some real funds so that we can take this work forward and make a working prototype.
“Power harvesting has a really important part in our future because in this country alone, we dispose of somewhere between 20,000 and 30,000 tonnes of batteries in landfill sites every single year - that is toxic chemicals going into the ground.
“There is a lot of commercial potential in this area.”
The university has filed for a patent application to ensure their rights to the new system.
There has also been a large international buzz from websites and blogs on the new technology.
The university believes this type of work is a great reflection of their innovative research.
