New school preparing for bus-iness

editorial image

PUPILS who join Bedford’s newest state school will be able to commute from Kempston with a dedicated bus service.

Bedford Free School will open in September, based at Cauldwell House in Cauldwell Street.

And the service will be for youngsters in Years 7 and 9 who are part of the school’s first intake.

Mark Lehain (pictured), principal designate for the school, said: “Because the free school idea started in Kempston in response to public demand, but the building is going to be over the railway bridge in Bedford town centre, we wanted to be sure that Kempston parents were able to make the choice to come to us - whether their children are 11 or 13.

“We know that public transport can be unreliable and that busy parents may have other children to drop off elsewhere on the school run, or jobs to rush to, so we have taken up the idea used by other state funded schools and will be putting on a bus.”

The school will be for pupils aged 11-16, but the initial intake will only be for 11 and 13-year-olds.
