RAIL firms that run services to Bedford have all improved their punctuality records.

According to Network Rail, which runs rail infrastructure across Britain, all three trains companies had more services running on time between December 11 and January 7 than they did 12 months earlier.

But First Capital Connect (FCC), which runs the Bedford- Brighton line which is the most popular service for Bedford commuters, was still below the national average.

Only 87.6 per cent of its trains ran on time. That was better than last year’s figure of 73.8 per cent of trains running on time, but still below the UK average of 88.7 per cent.

Arthur Taylor, spokesman for the Bedford Commuters’ Association, said: “I’m glad that punctuality is improving, particularly on First Capital Connect. We hold regular meetings with FCC, and this is one of the big things we’ve been trying to push with them,

“There’s still work to be done, but if we can look to getting 90 per cent of trains on time then that will be a reason to celebrate.

“I think the key is reducing the number of incidents like signal failures and point failures.”

He added: “If you go to the station to get a train you expect it to run on time. People want to get to work on time in the morning and to get home on time in the evening.

“Yes, there will be times when things go wrong, that’s life. But improving punctuality is good news for passengers, and it’s good news for the railways.”
