Fuel duty cut after T&C’s campaigning

A Times & Citizen campaign to highlight the fact that our town pays over the odds for fuel compared to other parts of the country has had its second success in Parliament.

On Wednesday, Chancellor George Osborne announced that he would scrap the 3p increase in fuel duty set by the last government.

And Bedford and Kempston MP Richard Fuller said that this was a triumph for the T&C’s efforts.

He said: “Just a couple of months ago, following research by the Times & Citizen, I was delighted to be part of Parliament’s efforts to persuade the Office of Fair Trading to investigate the unjustifiably high price for fuel at the pumps here in Bedford and in some other towns across the country.

“Now the campaign by T&C readers can claim another scalp, with the cancellation of the 3p rise in fuel duty scheduled for January.

“Together with freezing council tax and increasing the personal tax allowance even further to £9,440 from April next year, this will be a great help for working families.”

The Times & Citizen campaign began in January, when we revealed that drivers who stock up in town paid on average £40 more per year for their fuel than those in Luton, and £31 more than the national average.

We have been lobbying fuel firms across the country, and Conservative MP Mr Fuller has join our efforts.

The Times & Citizen website www.bedfordtoday.co.uk also features a map where visitors can find out the cheapest petrol prices where they live.
