A concerned supermarket worker has claimed complaints to management about the state of the kitchen have been ignored.
The worker, who wishes to remain anonymous, said several members of staff have spoken to the management at Tesco, in Cardington Road, but the issues have not been resolved.
The worker said: “We’ve raised concerns about the hygiene levels. The management seems to forget this is a fresh food serving area and cleanliness and hygiene should be above everything else.
“Apart from the food contamination risk, the health and safety of the workers is also being compromised.
“There is an unbearable odour from the drains, floors are sticky and disgusting, oil fat is coming out of the drains.”
They added: “The most dangerous part is one of the oven has a burst pipe which is leaking on to the electrical wires. This is something the staff regularly put their heads inside to clean.
“We have notified managers over and over again but nothing seems to be heard.”
A spokesman for Tesco said: “We take food safety and store hygiene extremely seriously.
“Occasionally issues do arise and we aim to resolve these as quickly as possible.
“We’d like to reassure customers that when any issues are brought to our attention they are dealt with immediately by store colleagues.”
