Motorists have taken advantage of the Mayor’s Free Parking Deal, with one Bedford town centre car park seeing a huge leap in visitiors.
New figures show the number of people using the Lurke Street town centre car park has risen by 60% since the free parking deal was introduced in November.
Mayor Dave Hodgson’s Free Parking Deal, which began on Saturday, November 23, gives shoppers and visitors two hours of parking free every Saturday in all council-owned town centre car parks.
The figures show the number of people using Lurke Street car park has grown from just over 1,000 on Saturday, November 16 to more than 1,600 on December 21.
Cllr Hodgson, said: “We’re delighted that the Free Parking Deal is already encouraging more people to visit and shop in the town centre.
“With other town centres struggling during the current financial climate, we are investing in ours to support businesses and shoppers and to help maintain a vibrant and busy town.
“The Free Parking Deal is a part of our commitment to show that Bedford is well and truly open for business”
In addition to the Free Parking Deal, the council worked with BedfordBID, offering late night shopping every Wednesday in the run-up to Christmas and every night from Monday, December 16 to Friday, December 20 in the town centre.
Lurke Street car park is now open until 12.30am on Fridays and Saturdays while Queen Street multi-storey car park is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Figures released for Lurke Street parking users show figures rise from 1,077 visiting on Saturday, November 16 to 1,689 on Saturday, December 21.
