Burt from the Benches - recess is over, now lets carry on with the job
The North East Beds MP's monthly column for the Times & Citizen
As I write Parliament is back in full swing for two weeks this September, prior to the party conference season later this month.
My family and I, like many constituents, had a chance for a break over summer and enjoyed the delights of the Suffolk seaside.
I love the UK countryside and coast, and while enjoying all Suffolk has to offer, I know that we are also very lucky in Bedfordshire to have national attractions like Woburn Abbey and Whipsnade, and excellent local activities in our towns and villages.
As a Foreign Office minister travelling widely I am becoming even more appreciative of our countryside and I do hope you will have had the opportunity to enjoy what is on our doorstep this summer.
Our Prime Minister came back from holiday with a slightly bigger family, and I am sure you were as delighted as we were at David and Samantha's news. The country has now had a chance to draw breath after the General Election, and the new coalition government is working well.
We are getting on with the job but looking towards some tough days ahead.
You will hear more in the autumn, and I have no doubt that there will be some further difficult decisions being made throughout all the government departments that will affect us nationally and will also change services in North East Bedfordshire as we continue to discover the full extent of inherited debt from the last administration.
We will do our best to make sound decisions that will get the country back on its feet.
The summer break is always a time for work experience students in Parliament, and we have been very pleased to welcome several students from the constituency into the office this year.
This gives an opportunity to learn a little about the world of work, but also to add some flesh onto the academic bones learnt about politics in university.
My view has remained the same on how you learn about politics – first find about people and community, because politics is how our world ticks, and that affects us all.
I hope this year's students will go away with a little more insight – and may be tempted into bringing their skills into this business in the future.
