BREAKING NEWS: Police find body of teenager at old quarry in Clophill.


The body of a teenager who drowned after going missing at an old quarry in Clophill has been recovered by search teams

The teenager got into difficulties swimming in a lake at the old quarry.

Bedfordshire Police were called to Jacques Lane in the village at about 6.40pm by the 16-year-old’s friends after they spotted him struggling to stay above water.

The boy has been named locally at Conor McColl, from Luton. The body was discovered at 1.15pm today (Friday, July 25).

Bedfordshire Police, Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, and the East of England Ambulance Service all attended the location to conduct the search.

Officers worked throughout the night and the search resumed this morning with a dive team coming in to continue searching the lake.

The family of the teenager are being supported by specially trained officers.

The schoolboy disappeared at 6pm and his friends called the emergency services but he could not be saved.

One tribute on Facebook by Sophie King read: “R.I.P Connor(sic) Taken So Young, You Was Such A Lovely Boy And Will Be Missed By So Many Hold Tight Up There R.I.P”

Another wrote: “Can’t believe your gone baby, I’m gunna love you forever, rip my beautiful angel.”

Tragic Conor’s family were at the scene yesterday(Fri) morning with the police.

Villagers in Clophill have claimed the tragedy was, “an accident waiting to happen”.

One said: “This was an accident waiting to happen.

“We wanted to take over the land ourselves and turn it into a leisure park for the village, which would have had proper security and supervision.

“That hasn’t happened and children have been climbing over the fence getting into the water.

“It’s been going on for ages. The problem is that it used to be a quarry and the water is very very deep.

“This has happened at the start of the summer holidays and kids have been going down there since the hot weather began.”

Another teenager went missing in a river in Cambridgeshire.

Just after 2am this morning (Friday, July 25) the body of a boy, believed to be 14 years old, was found in the River Great Ouse, nr Hartford.

Emergency services had been searching for more than 10 hours - after beginning their efforts at 3.40pm on Thursday, July 24.

The youngster was with a group of friends from St Peter’s School, Huntingdon, who decided to go for a swim.

It is understood the boy was not a strong swimmer and got into difficulties.
