A man tried to rape a woman motorist whose car had broken down in a layby.

The woman was stranded in the layby which joins the A6 near Oakley on Monday evening at around 7.30pm when she was approached by a man who sexually assaulted her and then tried to drag her into a field.

Det Sgt Craig Laws said: “We are treating this as an attempted rape and are urgently appealing for witnesses to come forward.

“The victim showed remarkable bravery and managed to fight the offender off, and it’s vital that we identify him so that we can stop him from carrying out further atrocious crimes.”

The offender is white, aged in his mid 30s to 40s, around 5ft 9in tall, well built and had bad teeth. He has straight dirty blond hair, was wearing dark clothing and riding a dark coloured mountain bike.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Det Sgt Laws on the Beds Police non-emergency number 101, or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
