Forget exploding demijohns and iffy efforts fit only for stripping paint, Bedford’s leading wine making suppliers have showcased the quality of modern home brew kits.

The Happy Brewer hosted a wine-and-canapes cruise on the John Bunyan community boat which featured four wines made in advance by hosts and shop owners, Stephen and Dawn Black.

Throughout the evening, Stephen and Dawn passed through the boat offering their top home-brew tips.

Dawn said: “The quality of the wine you can make today is second to none.

“The majority of our kits include the freshly-pressed grape juice sealed in a carton, which is as good as if you visited the vineyard and crushed your own grapes.”

The first wine to taste was an Australian white, Murray River Reserve, followed by a Californian blush Merlot.

There was also a Chilean Merlot and finally, a Spanish Rioja to savour – but by far the most popular offering of was a chocolate orange port, served with a brownie.

Dawn said: “With the port kit, you can make 15 bottles of chocolate orange decadence in six weeks. We’re taking orders from people who want to make it for Christmas!”

The Happy Brewer, in Union Street, sells everything needed to make wine, beer, cider and spirits at home.
