The Bedford birthplace of well-loved actor John Le Mesurier has been honoured with a Blue Plaque.

The circular plaque was unveiled on 34 Chaucer Road, where his parents Charles Elton Halliley and Amy Le Mesurier lived.

He was born there in 1912 but a year later they moved to Bury St Edmonds.

Le Mesurier was best known for playing Sgt Arthur Wilson in Dad’s Army, and appeared in hundreds of TV productions and theatre plays before his death in November, 1983.

The plaque ceremony was attended by his cousin Gavin Halliley, Councillor Colleen Atkins and the current owners of the house, Georgie and Dan Ashdown.
