Big tidy up campaign in final month
Thousands of bags of litter collected
Litter picking projects across Bedford Borough will enter their final stage this month.
More than 1,400 bags of rubbish have been collected during 66 litter picking events that have taken place as part of the Big Tidy Up.
The final month of activity kicks off with a town centre litter pick from Church Square at 10am today (Thursday, September 2).
Similar events are also scheduled until the end of November.
Dave Hodgson, the Mayor of Bedford, said: "We are delighted to have been part of Keep Britain Tidy over the last year.
"During that time, with help from volunteers of all ages, we have collected more than 1,400 bags of rubbish to keep our borough clean and tidy.
"Even though our partnership with Keep Britain Tidy on this campaign has come to an end, we will continue to work hard to protect our local environment and ensure Bedford Borough remains a great place to live, work and visit."
The Big Tidy Up is run by the Keep Britain Tidy group and aims to remove 500,000 bags of litter from the streets across the country.
In September 2009 Bedford was named as one of 11 local authority champions for the campaign.
Bedford Borough Council's Tidy Bedford Together campaign will now follow on from the Big Tidy Up with many local businesses supporting the scheme.
The latest participant is ShakeAway who have agreed to give free milkshake vouchers for any children under 16 who take part in an event during September.
