Bedford kids taste real food
Wild boar on the menu at food education event
A group of hungry children tried wild boar sausages and a King Edward squeak on Friday as a part of a food education campaign.
Goldington Lower School pupils attended the event which was organised by Taste Real Food Bedford.
The event, in which the children helped to cook their own lunch from start to finish, was designed to teach them all about the importance of locally-sourced produce.
All of the vegetables that were cooked were grown locally at organiser Sue Miller's allotment.
She said: "This is the first winter session that we have done but the children really enjoyed themselves.
"They got very enthusiastic about mashing the potatoes and enjoyed the tasting sessions.
"I was actually surprised how many of the subtle flavours they picked up on in the tasting session.
"All the children went home with a folder which is mainly aimed at the parents, it contains recipes and information about how to get hold of good local produce."
Taste Real Food Bedford is a voluntary organisation which runs local produce tasting and education sessions across the borough.
The organisation also works in partnership with The Foyer, a Bedford hostel which re-trains disadvantaged young people. Students who are training to work in the catering industry helped the children to cook the food on the day.
Sue said: "This is the first time that we have used young people from the Foyer to help with the cooking.
"They are currently training for an NVQ in catering and hospitality and I think they got a lot out of it.
"They are all going to come back and help with another of our projects next week."
