Bedford is now one of the best places in Britain if you need to spend a penny following the offical opening of new 24 hour toilets in Lurke Street.

The new toilets unveiled on Monday, September 15 means there are now more toilet facitilies available in Bedford than ever before.

Councillor Charles Royden, portfolio holder for environment and transport, said: “We made a commitment after the old toilets at Lurke Street closed to open a brand new 24-hour facility and these toilets are a stunning improvement to the old facilities which were avoided by the public and had low useage. Access to the new toilets has 24-hour monitoring by CCTV meaning these toliets will be very safe.

“There are now more toilets than ever before open to the public to use free of charge. The Community Toilet Scheme is going from strength to strength. Providing these public facilities is also important for local businesses.”

The news has been welcomed by businesses. Chairman of BedfordBID, Rae Levene, said: “BedfordBID are delighted Bedford Borough Council has decided to reopen this important facility in this part of the town.

The council has listened and acted upon feedback. The range and attractiveness of our facilities are a key element in helping us to continue to attract loyal and new customers to our town.”
