History students have laid wreaths at Ypres as part of a special tour of World War One battlefields.

The three pupils from Biddenham International School and Sports Collage visited the Menin Gate and the battlefields of the Somme.

Laying the wreath student Julia Cox said: “This would have made my granddad so proud.”

Julia and fellow students Ben Ashton and Maria Zeb also laid a cross on the grave of Bedford soldier, Percy Gibbert from 63 Gywm Street.

Ben said: “This visit has made the experience of war come alive for me, and I can appreciate what the soldiers must have gone through.”

Their trip was part of the four-year Government-funded Legacy 110 project to send two pupils from every school in the country on a battlefields tour. Pupils will then share their experiences with the rest of the school, and their communities.
