Batman readies to hit our screens

Pivotal scenes in this summer's major blockbuster were filmed at Cardington.

Holy film time Batman - the hottest blockbuster of 2008 will hit our screens in just two weeks' time.

The latest instalment of the Batman film series, The Dark Knight, opens wing in UK cinemas on July 25.

One of the movie's most anticipated scenes - the pivotal confrontation between Christian Bale as the Caped Crusader and Heath Ledger's Joker - was shot in former airship Shed No. 1 at Cardington.

And the Times & Citizen understands that another Cardington scene saw dog handlers brought over from the USA for a chase sequence featuring the Batmobile.

Both of the last two Batman movies have included scenes filmed at sets built in Cardington hangars, and work on each of films has been shrouded in secrecy.

The first flick Batman Begins shot under the cover name 'The Intimidation Game'.

And, when shooting began for the sequel, signs directed traffic through Shortstown with the letters 'RFK'. The acronym was believed to stand for 'Rory's First Kiss', the working title which is thought to be a reference to the son of director Christopher Nolan.

Bedfordshire County Council reckoned the first film was worth 5 million to the local economy.

Around 1,000 Bedfordians were cast as extras.

As shooting took place in Cardington, several big names, including lead actor Bale, were known to be staying at The Swan Hotel on the Embankment.
