Armed robbery in Bedford High Street - the full story
Crook held knife to a customer's throat
An armed robber held bank staff and customers at knifepoint before escaping with cash in a daylight raid on Bedford High Street.
The incident happened on Tuesday (February 2) when the crook held a knife to a customer's throat and demanded money from a female cashier at the Nat West bank in Bedford at around 3.45pm.
After a bag of money was handed over the offender left the scene on foot, heading in the direction of Kimbolton Road. Armed officers conducted a search of the area but were unable to find him.
Emergency services were called to the scene where the customer who had been threatened by the robber had received a cut to his hand. The bank was closed while police conducted a thorough forensic search and spoke to witnesses.
Det Sgt Gary Maxey, who is conducting the investigation, said: "The man walked into the bank with no mask or disguise and people may have seen him hanging about before hand, or after the event.
"As a result of the robbery the off-ender may be covered in red dye which is one of the crime deterrent measures used by the bank."
The robber is described as white, balding, and aged around 40-50. He was wearing black trousers, a white shirt and a dark dinner suit-style jacket.
A spokesman for NatWest bank said: "The customer and member of staff
involved are okay.
"Naturally as a matter of course the safety of our staff and customers is of paramount importance."
Witnesses can contact police on 01234 275254 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
