A sponsored abseil is to be held down the beautiful and historic Elstow Abbey and organisers are appealing for volunteers to take the plunge.

The event will take place on Saturday, May 2 from 10am and anyone aged 11 years and over can take part to raise funds for Christian Aid.

A spokesman for the charity said: “We are looking for people that are brave enough to sign-up to the challenge and go over the edge to end poverty. Take part with a friend or family member - you could even get your whole church behind you. It’s only £15 to register and we’d ask that you aim to raise at least £100 in sponsorship.

“With Christian Aid marking its 70th anniversary in 2015, it’d be great to have some 70 year-olds have a go!”

Last year, 25 people, including the Rev Jeremy Crocker (pictured), made it down the tower, raising more than £6,000 for some of the world’s poorest communities.
