A hot Beds of energy users
Home energy hotspots revealed in Bedfordshire
Energy consumption in Bedford is the fifth highest in the county according to new research.
Energy giants E.ON commissioned the study and found that people in Bedford spend on average 1,173.71 a year on household fuel.
Shefford came out top in the Bedfordshire study, with an average annual spend of 1,188.68.
Other Bedfordshire hot spots were Dunstable, Sandy, Luton, Leighton Buzzard and Biggleswade.
But despite having some of the highest carbon emitting wards in the country, Bedfordshire's figures are still lower than the average household spend in the UK which is 1,208 a year.
Shane Hughes, whose Bedford-based firm Carbon Accounting Systems advises businesses on how to reduce their carbon footprint, said: "This is not a surprise. We did a study in 2007 and realised that the area we studied, Castle Ward, was generally among the higher carbon emitting wards in the country.
"We have quite a lot of old Victorian housing stock and we need to think how we are going to refurbish those."
Although higher consumption in the winter is to be expected, experts at E.ON believe that people could be spending less.
Kevin Bryan, spokesman for E.ON, said: "As the weather in Bedfordshire would not vary greatly from town to town, the main reason for these differences in usage would be house age, house size and number of occupants and behaviours.
"The colder winter temperatures and darker nights inevitably lead to people using more energy, which is why we are offering advice to anyone who is concerned about how much they're using.
"We also want to make sure that people are on the right tariffs, and that vulnerable customers are aware of the additional support available to them."
