A party was held for Verona Rose, who celebrated her 100th birthday, at the Retirement Education Centre in Bedford where she attends a general studies course. The party was held on Thursday, September 24 at the centre in Rothsay Gardens with fellow students.

Born in Willesden Green, London, in 1915, Verona was tutored at home in her early years as her family believed in the importance of education and at 16 she trained as a teacher. She married in 1947 and had a song and a daughter, and now has grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her husband, a civil engineer, died in 1969 and she moved to Bedford in the 1980s to be near her family. Verona, who has received many cards and presents, said: “I have had lots of lovely friends all my life.”
