Former Town star makes huge gesture to stricken Town
Magnanimous ex-Hatter Don Hutchison is sponsoring two Luton Town youth team players despite being released at the end of last season.
Gary Sweet, Luton Town's managing director, said: "This is a truly amazing gesture by Don. For a player to turn around and refuse his final pay packet and instead ask to sponsor a youth player is unheard of.
"This shows the type of man that Don is, and what football means to him.
"We are very proud that Don has decided to sponsor a couple of Luton youngsters. When Don suggested it we were a bit taken aback I must say – this shows not only what a true professional Don is, but that his generosity is unique in the modern game."
Hutchison, 37, who will be sponsoring Luton starlets Scott Sinclair and Jake Howells' living expenses and wages for the entire season, said: "I've been very lucky in my career – I've played for some wonderful clubs and played with, and against, the world's best.
"I wanted to give some youngsters a helping hand, so with Luton being committed to developing youth talent, it seemed obvious to support them.
"Scott and Jake are great lads just starting out in football. They have loads to learn, but hopefully my sponsorship will get them off to a flying start. I wish them all the best and I want them to keep their feet on the ground and learn well – if they do that, the world of football is their oyster and they will never look back."
Sweet added: "Don, more than most, knows the dire times Luton have just come through. His time at Luton, with all the unrest, will not form part of his most treasured memories in football, I'm sure.
"No matter how bad it got though, he was completely professional and always gave 110 per cent. This massive gesture is a fantastic boost to the youth players and we are truly in Don's debt."
