Mawhinney hopes Hatters take pleasure at the result

A number of high profile names from across the footballing world have spoken out regarding the FA and Football League penalties awarded against the Hatters.

Former FA representatives David Davies and Graham Kelly, ex-Luton manager David Pleat, former Aston Villa chairman Doug Ellis and Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp, to name but a few, have all expressed their amazement at the severity of the sanctions.

The issue of the 30-point deficit has even been raised in the House of Commons and has featured extensively in the national media.

Nick Owen, chairman of LTFC2020 said: "It has been vital to keep our plight high up the agenda. With events happening during Euro 2008 and the Olympics build up, it has been heartening to see that we have had full pages in The Times, Daily Mail, Observer and the Guardian.

"In addition, BBC TV, Sky, ITV and Setanta have also given us detailed coverage.

"We are not alone in our amazement of the penalties handed out for the actions of others no longer at the club. However, it is only us that can get ourselves out of this mess. When we do finally achieve safety,
I think Bedfordshire will see the biggest party for decades."

Speaking in defence of the 20-point penalty issued by the Football League, Lord Mawhinney, the league chairman, said: "We believe this outcome protects the integrity of our competition, though I understand that some Luton fans may be unhappy with the penalty.

"No doubt they will balance this unhappiness against their pleasure in being able to watch their team play league football."
