REVIEW: Sean Hughes, Bedford Corn Exchange, Friday, October 2.
By Paul Fisher
When a comedian actually starts making jokes about the lack of laughter, gets an ironic round of applause and does an impression of tumbleweed you know something is not going to plan.
Having seen Sean Hughes on TV for many years I was rather looking forward to seeing him live, and yet after an almost two hour set I couldn't help feeling slightly disappointed.
There were just not enough laugh out loud jokes, tales or one liners to get your teeth into.
Towards the end of the show there were some amusing links to earlier jokes, but because the original gag had not left you rolling in the aisles, which were only half full, it did not really have the intended effect.
Some of the best material was linked to Bedford itself, with cheeky one liners about Glen Miller's final flight and his music.
But with so many jokes also linked to Sean's aging, I couldn't help thinking that the act missed the youthful energy witnessed when Jimmy Carr and Russell Howard came to the Corn Exchange.
Funny, but maybe just not funny enough to fill two hours.
