REVIEW: Cinderella, Milton Keynes Theatre, Monday, December 7.

Cinders sparkle at Milton Keynes Theatre

I defy anybody to go to this pantomime and not leave with a huge smile on their face having laughed their way through the two hours worth of feel good fun.

Pantos have definitely moved on from when I was a child and there were parts of the first half of the performance that bordered on a Bobby Davro stand-up show for the parents, cracking gags about bankers, MPs and Tiger Woods.

That's not to say there's not plenty of the classic slap-stick humour and audience participation of old piled in to keep the kids happy.

There are a number of truly laugh out loud moments for kids and adults alike, mostly provided by Davro and the outrageous ugly sisters Whitney and Britney, played by Chris Dennis and David Langham.

Cinderella is played by one of Britain's leading West End ladies, Louise Dearman, with an effortless elegance.

Come the few musical numbers the panto has, you realise why she has been singing on the professional stage from the age of 12.

Lets be honest Hollywood legend Micky Rooney portrayal of Baron Hardup was never going to be energetic at the grand old age of 89, but you cannot help but like the little man. His demure presence next to the towering ugly sisters is humorous in its own right.

Anthea Turner adds to the Christmas magic with a gag or two about GMTV and being the perfect housewife, while Anthony Kavanagh and Chris Nelson completed the cast's central line-up giving strong performances as Prince Charming and Dandini.

It's great family fun from start to finish, but it's certainly stolen by Davro's charm and an eight foot Kangaroo. Go see it.

Cinderella is on at Milton Keynes Theatre until January 17, 2010. For more information visit www.miltonkeynestheatre.com
