REVIEW: Enjoy, Milton Keynes Theatre.
A thinking man's dark comedy
It's an Alan Bennett play so you know no matter how much the publicity people tell you the show a comedy, it's going to have some dark aspects.
Enjoy, while living up to it's title, is no different.
What initially seems like a situation comedy about an elderly couple still living in the past soon turns into a social commentary of Britain's inner cities and working class life.
Bennett then widens the thematic contrasts in the second half of the play, mixing slapstick comedy with death, homophobia, cross-dressing, prostitution and sexual abuse.
The laughs do come thick and fast, but this is one comedy, which ends leaving the audience thoughtful and a little sombre, rather than rolling in the aisles.
With a cast including David Troughton, Alison Steadman and Richard Glaves this is one dark comedy to go Enjoy.
