Ben Raza’s monthly arts column: Childhood, painting demonstrations, and contrasting objects
Dora Holzhandler is this month’s featured artist at the Arts Centre & Gallery in Howard Street.
Born in Paris to Jewish refugee parents from Poland, Dora’s paintings are inspired by her childhood memories.
Her life included being fostered in her early years by an affectionate farming family, being returned to her extended family at age five, and then moving to London’s East End aged six.
Her work is characterised by a childlike innocence, and is often greeted by art-lovers with smiles of self-recognition.
> Also coming up at the Arts Centre & Gallery, local artist Eric Seeley will be giving a free demonstration on Saturday (October 20).
Using Winton Oil he will be completing his work Peacocks Sale Yard.
Turn up from 10am-3pm to see how he creates his work.
> This Saturday also sees the beginning of a one-week shared installation by Jan Kilcoyne and Marianda at the Eagle Gallery in Castle Road.
From 10am-5.30pm (11.30am-4pm on Sunday) there will be the chance to see the creations of two artists who work with objects in very different ways.
Jan’s work uses the expressive and aesthetic qualities of found objects, and this particular display will concentrate on books.
Marianda prefers to amass “stuff”, juxtaposing and binding together unrelated objects to create something fresh and new.
