Into Solitude and into the future
A young film-maker who has written, directed and starred in his first film is heading home for its premiere, as it will be shown publicly for the first time at the University of Bedfordshire.
Joe Howson, from Kempston Rural, is a graduate of the university, and will be back there on October 25 for the first showing of Into Solitude.
Joe said that he has always wanted to make the story, and shooting the feature gave him the chance to fulfil a number of other ambitions too.
He said: “It’s the story of Josh Callow. He’s the lead character, and it’s about his battle with depression and loneliness.
“His best friend Tim is trying to save him from his downward spiral, and his ex-girlfriend is trying to convince him to let go of the past and move on. It’s an epic drama with lots of twists and turns.
“This is a story I’ve always wanted to tell. And ultimately I just thought ‘That’s it, I’m going to buy all the equipment and just make it happen.”
Joe, who works for web design firm Fivesite as a search marketing consultant, decided to make the film while holidaying in Vancouver, Canada, last year.
Although he first planned to shoot the film on the other side of the Atlantic, an old university friend convinced him to come back and film it in Bedford and Milton Keynes, along with a few scenes in Ireland, and Joe was won over by her suggestion.
He said: “There are so many great landscapes here in Bedfordshire, and one of the fields is almost like a character in the film itself.
“I wanted to shoot parts of the county that people have never seen, and showcase the talent that’s here in the town.
“The score is done by Stephen Currell Jr. He’s been a good friend for seven or eight years, I’ve always wanted to work with him, and the music is fantastic, it’s the heart of the film.”
Other local talents include Joe’s university friends Catherine McFall and Phil Mardlin, who play the ex-girlfriend and best friend of the lead character.
And Bedford photographer Faith Dwight did the principal photography.
Into Solitude will show at the University Of Bedfordshire theatre on Thursday, October 25. Tickets are £2.50 and are available on the door.
