Could you take a stunning image of one of Bedfordshire’s Hidden Treasures?

Together with Bedford Camera Club we have launched an exciting photographic competition for 2012 -open to all Times & Citizen readers.

There’s an open category for T&C readers at the camera club’s exhibition in April titled Bedfordshire’s Hidden Treasures.

See below for Times & Citizen’s photographer June Essex’s top ten tips on taking a good image.

Your picture should ideally be taken within the T&C’s distribution area of Bedford borough and Mid Beds but any image taken in the county since October 1, 2011 is accepted.

Pictures may be in colour or black and white, and must be emailed in PDI digital format - sorry, no prints will be accepted.

The judges will be the Times & Citizen’s photographic team of June Essex and Tracey Goodacre who will choose a first, second and third in our two age categories - one for over 18s, and one up to and including 18 years of age (as of March 12, 2012).

All entrants must live in the T&C distribution area - this competition is open to both members and non-members of local camera clubs.

The top three images in each age group will be printed and mounted for show at the exhibition, and gifted to the winners afterwards.

The overall winners will also see their work displayed to our army of readers in the pages of the Times & Citizen.

To enter, please email your image - no larger than 8MB in size - to pictures@timesandcitizen.co.uk

Your picture should be attached to the email as a jpeg. Please also include in your email brief details of the photo - up to 100 words - together with your name, postal address and contact phone number.

One entry per person only. All pictures must arrive no later than 9am on Monday, March 12.

Top ten tips by June Essex

1: Check that your equipment is in working order, that you have spare batteries and cards in case of unforeseen emergencies.

2: Composition. If you are not familiar with the Rule of Thirds it’s worth looking up and keeping in mind as a guide line for composition.

Imagine your viewfinder is divided into nine equal sections (like a noughts and crosses grid). If you place your subject or points of interest where these sections cross, your photograph will be more balanced and lead the viewer’s eye naturally into you image

3: Think about your depth of field. Experiment with different apertures.

4: Watch out for changes in light and weather conditions.

5: Keep backgrounds plain or clutter free.

6: Try different viewpoints. Don’t be afraid to move in closer or change your vantage point to look up or down on your subject.

7: If you’re shooting landscapes or macro use a tripod for stability.

8: Make interesting geometric shapes within your viewfinder.

9: Be bold! Don’t be afraid to experiment with new techniques in lighting, colour, night photography, etc.

10: When photographing children or animals get down to their eye level.
