I stopped at this nice pub on the 1st May 2013. I had visited the Wrest Park and stopped here for a meal at 6pm. The pub was very quite as it was early in the evening. I had a nice pint of bitter and had Ham, Egg & chips. The chips were very nice along with the rest, which included peas. It was well presented. The landlord served me and was friendly and talkative. I eat in many pubs around the country and this is one of the best.

I ate at this pub once before but was very unimpressed with not only the food, but also the drink quality and staff attitude. There was a young blonde working there at the time that admittedly looked ok from behind but when she turned to serve me my dinner I nearly fell off my chair as the disgusting figure that gazed back at me - in fact - I thought for that single moment, Death himself had arrived to return me to the firey hell from which I once came. The balding landlord's attitude had a lot to be desired too. He was abrupt and served lager which had more resemblance in taste to my hamster's urine. He was also extremely offended when I raised the issue and told me he was so rich he did not need my money and that I should leave his establishment immediately. Rest assured I will not be returning. Very Disappointed with the service and manager. Went there Sunday night (24-Apr-2011) with my wife and some friends for evening meal and night out. I ordered the fish pie for my wife and steak pie for myself before any of our friends ordered. The pub was fairly busy although not full. Our friends started to receive their orders after about 25/30 minutes, but we did not. I queried this and the manager said the meals were "on the way". A group of four people sat at the next table and ordered about half an hour after we did and received their meals and we were still waiting. I once again queried this with the manager. It's now one hour since we ordered and we still had no food. He said the meals were on there way. When I pointed out that our friends had eaten their meals despite ordering after us, he said some food took longer to cook than others. When I pointed out that the group next to us who ordered half an hour later than us has received their steak pies, he said that they were busy and that if I could do any better I should go into the kitchen and cook it myself. The arrogance of the man. I asked him to double check our order was "On it's way" as he kept saying. Five minutes later he came back to me and admitted they had lost our order, oh and by the way the steak pie had now sold out. Having no other means of eating that night I reluctantly ordred a replacement fish and chip meal. This and the wife's fish pie arrived then in about ten minutes with a curt apology. The fish pie was so hot it was oibvious it had been microwaved. We were not offered any compensation, free drinks or free meal, despite the fact that the replacement meal (fish and chips) was 25p cheaper than the steak pie!! We ate our meals which I didn't enjoy (£8.25 for fish and chips!!) and promptly left. I will never go back to htis pub due to the arrogance and lack of customer care shown by the man in charge.

The Woodford's Wherry beer was good but the landlord was arrogant and rude when my friend queried for the third time that his food had not been served even though I ordered after him and had received my food half an hour before. My friend was told to go and cook it himself if he could do any better, and that the food was on the way. Five minutes later the landlord came over to our table to apologise that the order had been lost and that my friend's order was now off. He re-ordered a different dish, 25p cheaper order without a refund of the difference or any way of making up for it.
This arrogance contributes to why pubs are going out of business. If you want good friendly service, don't go to the Star & Garter, Silsoe.

Indifferent service, odd food, a very noisy party that we had not been warned about when booking earlier in the day. When one of my sons was unwell and I asked for the bill urgently and it did not come, I was then told "we are rather busy". Well good for them. But surely offering adequate service is required if one is running a restaurant?
Apparently not.
I will not be returning.

Very disappointed with Sunday Lunch here yesterday. Not only was the food very mediocre; uncooked yorkshire puddings, overcooked roast beef, tasteless mash (if that's what it was?), fish pie with very little fish, we had to wait an hour to get this. If we hadn't already had drinks on the tab, we would have walked out rather than waited, especially when the standard of food recived was so low. The neighbouring table waited 45minutes for sandwiches and a salad.

Took a group of 29 here for lunch. Manager was incredibly co-operative, with an instant menu available. On the day, the service was excellent, the food was outstanding, and the courtesy was more than could be expected. I would highly recommend this pub to both groups and individuals. This is the second time I have taken a group there, and the service has been consistently of the same high quality.

Well done to all the staff and management!

Nice, traditional pub in the attractive centre of this village, next door to the church.

They have real ales, wines by the glass, a range of food and an outside terrace as well as comfy seating inside.

Conveniently located for Wrest Park (which has limited eating facilities) and has a Good Pub Guide “Lucky Dip” status.
