Bedford ace pots his way to the final

England U19 snooker star Darrell Whitworth ended the year on a high after he left with the runners-up trophy at the Belgian U21 Open International last weekend.

The 19-year-old from Bedford was one of six players selected from England to compete in the tournament held in Genk.

After qualifying from a very tight round robin stage, where he beat Malta's U21 champion Thurston Grixti 3-0 and the Belgian European U21 representative Nicky Godeyne 3-0, he proceeded to the knock-out stages.

The quarter-final was played against fellow England International Darren Bond, who he beat 4-2, before moving on to a last four clash with England compatriot Ben Harrison, eventually winning 4-2.

In what was his first appearance in a major final, Whitworth narrowly lost out 5-4 to Belgian Luca Brecel.

Today's Vote

What do you think about Government proposals to double the size of Yarl's Wood?
After what we've been through in Bedfordshire with the riot and fire five years ago, I'd rather the facilities were built somewhere else.
Fair enough, we have got to house failed asylum seekers somewhere.
It's a recipe for disaster housing foreign criminals with immigrants who have outstayed their visas and others going through the fast-track immigration process.
