Cycling round-up

Warm conditions did not stop Neil Allonby from racing home in record time at Icknield Road Club's open 50-mile time-trial on Sunday.

Allonby clocked a new personal best time of 1.55.27hrs and was one of six clubmen who took on the course between Bedford, Buckden and Biggleswade.

He was followed home by Peter Harridge in 2.00.15hrs, Richard Gray, 2.01.04hrs, Andy Parrish, 2.02.59hrs, Barry Gilzean, 2.06.49hrs, and John Pfeiffer in 2.18.52hrs.

Despite only finishing second, Harridge now leads the club championship standings and could clinch the trophy in the upcoming 12-hour event to be held in September.

However, the day was marred by a serious injury to third-placed Gray, who suffered a fall from his cycle when he struck a raised kerb and was taken to hospital with a cracked shoulder.

Elsewhere, Pfeiffer was also in action at the veterans' 10-mile time trial on the Leighton Buzzard by-pass course on Wednesday.

He clocked 26.13mins and finished behind clubmate Brian Davies, who came home in 24.43mins.

Peter Hopkins, meanwhile, continues to perform well and, over the weekend, he entered the Diss and District Classic Bike 25-mile event.
Riding a 1953 bicycle made by AJ Hodge of Luton, he recorded a time of 1.16.56hrs in the event over a hilly course.

Back to his best, Maciej Weremko stormed to victory in this week's 11.3-mile Beds Road Club Evening League series event in 26.19mins.

Thursday's event was the 12th out of the 14-event series and Sam Hayes was second in 26.33mins and Mark Cook third in 26.54mins.

During the 2008 series, over 110 different riders have competed in the events, making it the most successful league ever in its 30 year history.

Meanwhile, at the Icknield Road Club 50-mile time-trial on Sunday, two of the three Beds Road Club members who competed set new bests, while Matt Chudley was forced to retire through injury.

Hayes' time of 1.52.49hrs was a new best by 3.59mins, while Lyndon Lewis improved his previous best by 7.24mins with a time of 2.07.16hrs.

Team Sanjan Design verterans Stuart Tarry and Nick Pitt claimed second and fourth places finishes at the VTTA 10-mile time-trial on Wednesday.

Tarry clocked 21.33mins, while Pitt managed 21.58mins.

At the St Ives CC 10-mile time-trial, Andy Bright clocked 25.15mins for seventh place, while in roasting hot conditions at the Shaftesbury CC 50-mile time-trial near Newmarket on Saturday, Ian Markham recorded one of his fastest ever times at the distance with 1.54.53hrs, while Alan Crane managed 2.03.21hrs.

At the St Neots CC 22.4-mile time-trial, meanwhile, Bright came home in 1.00.30hrs.

Are you feeling the pinch in the ongoing credit crunch?
Too right, food and energy bills are hurting the most.
As long as I don't lose my job I'm just about OK
Stocks and shares falling doesn't really affect me.
