Swifts victory set up cup final derby

A comprehensive 24-0 victory over Stockwood Park moved Bedford Swifts into the final of the Beds County Shield.

Swifts led 12-0 at the break thanks to tries from Darren Stapleton and veteran warhorse Lee Crawford, Alun Evans converting one.

Richie Sinclair extended Swifts' lead after the break, rounding off his weaving run from deep with a somersault under the sticks. Evans added the extras.

An altercation with five minutes left saw Swifts' Crawford sin binned and Park's number eight shown the red card.

Swifts then rounded off victory when Sinclair bagged his second try of the afternoon in the corner.

The win set up an all-Bedford final against bitter rivals Bedford Queens.

This week, Swifts travel to Bugbrooke in the league where a win will keep them on top of the table heading into the last few games of the season.

Sharnbrook & Colworth, meanwhile, enjoyed a convincing 41-12 friendly win over Northampton Heathens II.

Playing up the slope in the first half, Sharnbrook took an early lead thanks to Steve Judge's score in the corner. Although the conversion was missed, Denver Bennett went over to double Sharnbrook's lead, with Barry Stuart kicking the first of his four conversions.

Heathens hit back with a converted try, but Warwick Bennett drove over before the break to make it 19-7 at half time.

With the slope, Sharnbrook ran riot in the second half, with Chris Strand, Mark Furneaux and Judge all touching down. Stuart added a penalty and, although Northampton scored a late try, it was nowhere near enough.

This weekend Sharnbrook play an away friendly against Cottenham Renegades.

Kempston II, meanwhile, enjoyed a 29-27 home win over Stockwood Park II in the East Midlands Merit League.
