Press conference called off at 11th-hour

Chaos surrounded Matt Skelton's scheduled press conference with Danny Williams today (Thursday) as it was called off at the 11th-hour.

Bizarrely, no-one had informed the Bedford boxer, who was just ten minutes away from the Park Lane Hotel when the Times & Citizen contacted him and told him it was off.

This was the latest twist in the Williams-Skelton saga that started with the Brixton bomber pulling out of July's fight because of flu.

The pair are due to top the bill at London's ExCel Arena on February 25 as they meet at the same venue where Skelton knocked out John McDermott in little over a minute last month and Williams conquered Audley 'A-Force' Harrison.

Skelton said: "You can get mad about it but it's not going to solve anything. It's the boxing game."

Sports Network called off the conference this morning without citing a reason.

Skelton, 38, said: "They wouldn't call it off for no reason, but what the reason is I don't know. I think the fact that it hasn't happened will fuel specualtion. Whether it's a very clever tactical move, I'm not sure.

"But it has not affected me in any way, I will just get on with it.

"Things are going well and I'm feeling really good. We are just going to go with what I do best. You can plan as much as you like for a fight but you don't know what will happen when that first bell goes."

Skelton is training locally for the bout, but his team are looking at training camps all over the world for some heavy sparring.

WBA world champion Nicolay Valuev, the 7ft 2ins, 23-stone giant known as the Beast From The East, has been touted as the golden carrot for the winner.

Meanwhile Williams, 32, has claimed he will tame Skelton in next month's fight.

He said: "Skelton does not worry me one bit. Why would I be scared of Skelton when Valuev makes him look like a little bear cub?

"Skelton is just rough and wild and needs taming and that is what I will do to him by mastering him with my boxing skill.

"No matter how much he trains and practises, Skelton will never be able to box and will always be a scrapper who is barely able to string together a bunch of punches.

"All he has got going for him is his size and strength and he will try to do to me what he does in every fight by leaning, brawling and elbowing, but I won't let him do that because he will be chewing on my jabs."

Skelton though is unmoved by all the hype and specualtion.

He added: "The carrot for me is to beat Danny Williams and if at the end of it there is the opportunity at bigger things then that's all very well."
