Depleted men dig deep
Bedford and County AC pull off a stunning victory in their Southern Men's League opener
Despite being depleted by injury, illness and unavailability, Bedford and County AC still managed to record a win in their first Southern Men's League match at Peterborough at the weekend.
Although newly-promoted Braintree led for most of the afternoon, a late surge by the Bedford youngsters narrowed the gap and resulted in the team running out victorious by eight points.
Many of the club's younger athletes shone with Steve Tuttle leading the way. He recorded a new personal best of 15.15.9mins in the 5,000m, won the 1,500m in 4.23.4mins and capped the afternoon off by triumphing in the 3,000m steeplechase in 10.57.8mins, another personal best.
He was well backed up by 17-year-old Max Sturgess, who won the 400m in 51.7secs, the 200m in 23.6secs and was fourth in the 100m in 12.2 secs.
Junior athlete Cairon Criag won the long jump with a leap of 6.36m and won the B-string javelin with a throw of 33.8m and made a good contribution to the relays.
Other notable performances came from Steve Mellon, who was third in the 800m, second in the 400m B-string and also recorded a second place finish in the 1,500m B- string, while junior Greg Packman achieved a personal best in the hammer, his throw of 26.14m good enough for third.
Not to be outdone, veteran athlete Trevor Sinclair won the B-string long jump with 5.64m and the B-string shot with 9.29m, as well as placing second in the javelin with 37.77m.
Fellow veterans Pete Carpenter and Tennyson James participated in a large number of events, each notching up significant contributions to the club's points total.
