Ladies exit FA Cup as local rivals ease through

Not even a goal from Sarah Saunders could prevent history-making Bedford Ladies from crashing out of the FA Cup in the first round proper.

Having made that stage of the competition for the first time in their history, Bedford went down 4-1 at Northampton Town.

Bedford started nervously and went 1-0 down on five minutes when they were harshly penalised for a back pass.

Northampton made it 2-0 five minutes later with a 25-yard free-kick, but Bedford got themselves back into the game before the break via the penalty spot.

Victoria Mawdsley's reverse pass set Tasha Fensome free and when she was hauled down in the box and Saunders made no mistake from the spot.
Bedford should have had a second penalty three minutes into the second half when Victoria Mawdsley was clattered by the Cobblers keeper, before the hosts scored twice before the hour to seal victory.

Bedford's Reserves, meanwhile, drew 2-2 at Leighton United, thanks to two Sarah Town goals, while Flitwick Eagles lost 8-0 at Hitchin Hearts.
There was an 8-1 victory against Parklands Tigers for Bedford's U16s, with Priya Bhatti, Chloe Hall, Rianon Patterson and Sophie Smith all scoring twice, while Charlotte Peel made history for Flitwick Eagles U15s as they beat Potters Bar 8-0.

Peel scored four times as she registered a hat-trick for the fourth week running, while Beth Smith got two and Loise Spendalow and Sophie Britton one each.

The outstanding Zoe Wright opened the scoring with a cracking 20-yard drive and Annabelle Keech then thumped home a header from Shelbee Clarke' corner.

Keech headed home her second goal after the break and Haleena Gill made sure of victory with Bedford's fourth. Billing hit back with a late long-ranger but Bedford had already done enough.

Bedford's U13s hammered Blisworth Vixens 7-1 to end their 100 per cent record and maintain their own.

Brenna Ryan led the way with four goals, Paige Hartley scored twice and Ellie Edgar got the other.

In Home Counties League Division Two, Flitwick Eagles thrashed Hoddesdon Owls 7-2. Lucy Embleton slotted in Ellie Keep's corner after only two minutes as Eagles bounced back from last week's defeat.

Abi Lloyd scored two goals in a four-minute period and Keep added another to make it 4-0.

The Owls hit back with two goals to make it 4-2 at the break, but second half goals from Lucy Embleton, Lloyd and Jess Coverdale helped to keep Flitwick top of the League.

Flitwick's U12s lost 1-0 at Leighton, while their U11s edged past Mid Beds Tigers 6-5.

Eagles were 4-1 down after only 20 minutes, but fought back to claim victory with Hannah Payne, Zoe Blake and Taylor Adams all netting braces.

Their U10s also won as they beat Sandy Colts 6-2. Megan Gordon found the net five times and Lara Billington scored her first goal for the club.

What do you think about Government proposals to double the size of Yarl's Wood?
After what we've been through in Bedfordshire with the riot and fire five years ago, I'd rather the facilities were built somewhere else.
Fair enough, we have got to house failed asylum seekers somewhere.
It's a recipe for disaster housing foreign criminals with immigrants who have outstayed their visas and others going through the fast-track immigration process.
