Howarth keen to build Bedford momentum
Eagles have been given a huge boost ahead the new campaign with the news that midfielder Aaran Cavill has agreed to re-sign for the club from Hemel Hempstead Town.

The influential Cavill, who began his career at Northampton Town, has also played for Hitchin Town and returns following a successful trial during pre-season.

His previous time at the New Eyrie was back in the 2006-07 season, when the club were playing in the Conference South.

Bedford boss Lee Howarth also admitted that he is trying to persuade midfielder James Gould, who has also been on trial at the club, to commit for next season.

Howarth's side have now recorded back-to-back wins, after they followed up on their impressive 2-1 victory against Cambridge United with a 1-0 win at St Neots on Saturday, midfielder Colm Kierans on target.

And, with the BGB Southern League Premier Division opener at home to Evesham United now a little over a week away, Howarth says he is delighted with the momentum his team are building.

He said: "I think the game at St Neots was an important game for us to win because you don't want to go away to a lower non-league side and get beaten at this stage of pre-season.

"They did keep the ball very well and wanted to play it on the ground, all over the pitch. I was happy to let them have it in their own half, as they couldn't do us any harm there and then just take it off them as soon as they get into our half, which we did, really. I want to base our game on being very tight at the back, making very few mistakes.

"The immediate aim when I took over was to start winning a game or two and get a bit of momentum going, as you don't want to be going into the first game of the season having not won in half a dozen pre-season games."

Howarth also expressed his gratitude for the support he has received since taking over, adding: "I'm delighted to be in charge and I especially would like to thank the chairman and all the supporters, who have been great so far.

"I've had a lot of positive messages from fans, so hopefully we can do our best and have a good season."

Eagles round-off their pre-season preparations on Saturday with a trip to Barton Rovers, kick-off 3pm.

Today's Vote

Can marathon runner Paula Radcliffe and badminton star Gail Emms win Olympic gold for Bedford?
Paula's injury and the quality of Gail's opponents might make it tough.
I'm backing Paula to fulfil her dream at last.
Gail must do it after her fabulous first round win with Nathan Robertson.
Come on girls! You both can do it!
