Swimming round-up

Modernians swimmer Sam Briggs clocked two new personal best times at the National Age Group Championships in Sheffield.

Having achieved qualification in both the 100m and 200m freestyle, Briggs gained new PBs in both events and made the final of the 100m event.

And, despite only finishing eighth in the final, it was enough to secure another best, which placed him seventh overall in the list of British registered swimmers.

Meanwhile, six Mid Beds Swim Squad members competed in the 2008 National Age Group Championships in Sheffield.

Emily McConnell, 11, Caleb Hughes, 12, Shauna Lee, 12, Alex Raine, 14, Alasdair Kerr, 14, and Tom Kelly, 14, all qualified for the meeting after their efforts at the Regional Championships.

In Yorkshire, Mid Beds finished third in the Boy's Top Club awards and seventh in the Overall Top Club section to receive their highest ranking to date.

McConnell and Lee swam solidly in the 100m breaststroke and 200m freestyle respectively, with the former finishing fourth in the final, missing out on a medal by 0.3 of a second.

Raine finished 16th in the 1,500m freestyle and 22nd in the 800m freestyle and was joined by Kelly, Hughes and Kerr in the 800m freestyle relay, where the quartet finished in 17th spot.

Hughes collected the 12 years Top Boy award after qualifying for all 13 finals in his age group, collecting eight gold medals.

Hughes' winning events were the 200m freestyle, 400m freestyle, 800m freestyle, 1,500m freestyle, 100m backstroke, 200m backstroke, 200m individual medley and 400m individual medley and he added to his haul with a silver in the 200m breaststroke and bronze in the 100m breaststroke.

Today's Vote

Can marathon runner Paula Radcliffe and badminton star Gail Emms win Olympic gold for Bedford?
Paula's injury and the quality of Gail's opponents might make it tough.
I'm backing Paula to fulfil her dream at last.
Gail must do it after her fabulous first round win with Nathan Robertson.
Come on girls! You both can do it!
