Five-hours efforts of Bedfordshire crews in vain at Aspley Guise.

Fire completely destroyed a thatched cottage despite the efforts of six crews who battled the blaze for nearly five hours.

The alarm was raised at the cottage in Spinney Lane, Aspley Guise, at 12.21am on Wednesday, when the property's chimney caught alight.

Crews from Woburn, Bedford, Leighton Buzzard, Potton, Toddington and Broughton in Buckinghamshire, fought until 5.18am to put the inferno out.

Firefighters had to call for an aerial platform to cut the thatch roof away in order to get to the source of the fire.

The roof and first floor of the building were completely destroyed by the flames and the ground floor suffered 100 per cent water damage.

No-one was injured in the blaze.

Have you had an annual pay rise in the last 12 months?
Yes, a whopper, thanks for asking.
A small one, but it has hardly covered the increased costs of living.
Not this year, I'm afraid.
What's an annual pay rise? I can't remember the last time I had one.
