Renewed fears over safety of building since the business closed down in 2002

Firefighters were called for the 17th time in six years to the derelict former Forrester Foods factory in Dallas Road, Kempston, on Sunday morning.

Around 75 per cent of what remains of the building was destroyed in a blaze which was left to burn out under control.

A spokesman for the fire service said: "We have received repeated calls to this former factory since it was closed down in 2002. Every time there is a threat to life, for the firefighters at the scene if not the public nearby.

"On this occasion fumes from burning materials were toxic and we asked the police to check that neighbours had their windows and doors closed.

As the building is now apparently undergoing demolition it is even more dangerous, and although there is a security fence it does not seem to be keeping people at bay.

"The fire service had crews there all night. This ties up resources which might have been needed elsewhere."

Today's Vote

Do you support the Unison staff who went on a two-day strike?
Yes, living costs are spiralling and their wages are being left behind.
No, it's important their wage demands are kept in check to keep our tax bills down.
They might have a case but going on strike didn't help their cause.
