Video presentation on what would be the first new canal built in over a century
Plans for a canal between Bedford and Milton Keynes have been showcased at a public meeting.
Patrick Hall, MP for Bedford and Kempston, organised the event at Centenary Hall, Kempston.
Visitors included Jonathan Shaw, the Government minister at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs who has responsibility for waterways, plus members of British Waterways, Renaissance Bedford and the Nirah project.
The Bedford & Milton Keynes Waterways Trust was founded more than ten years ago, to work on the project linking the River Great Ouse with the Grand Union Canal. If it is successful, it would be the first new canal built in the country for more than a century.
Last year the scheme was turned down for Lottery funding after being shortlisted among the final 11 projects being considered.
But in January of this year it was announced that the first work will begin in 2009, when a tunnel is built under the A421.
A DVD about the project was shown to visitors at this month's meeting, featuring former Inspector Morse star Kevin Whately.
