No May elections in Bedford, Burt predicts
MP says politicians are happy that council voting can wait until 2009.
No council elections will take place in Bedford this year, according to Alistair Burt.
The Conservative MP for North-East Beds revealed this week that he has been in discussions with the Government, which confirmed the May poll was set to be postponed.
2008 was scheduled to be an election year for Bedford Borough Council, with a third of council seats up for grabs.
But with a major shake-up of local government set to take place in 2009, newly-elected members would serve for less than a year.
Mr Burt said: "Political opinion seems comfortable with the facts that elections are expensive, and that we would not be electing
anybody to actually do anything. The Government does not think elections must be held, and no-one in Bedfordshire is calling for them. And the Government's timetable for introducing unitary authorities will allow that to happen."
