Mid Beds MP wants to ban abortions after 20 weeks
Nadine Dorries officially launched her campaign to ban "barbaric" abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy at a House of Commons conference on Tuesday afternoon.

The Conservative MP for Mid Bedfordshire claimed Britain would become the "abortion capital of Europe" unless action was taken.

During the conference the ex-nurse claimed scientific advances had proved babies as young as 20 weeks could survive outside the womb.

She said: "The abortion process post-20 weeks is frankly not the mark of a decent society, because as a process itself it is frankly barbaric."

In England and Wales there were 193,700 abortions last year - a rate of 18.3 per 1,000 women aged 15 to 44, higher than any other western European country.

Mrs Dorries believes a cut in ther upper limit for abortions from 24 weeks to 20 would stop 2,500 terminations a year taking place.

The campaign launch was the culmination of long-running efforts to lobby other MPs for support.

Today's Vote

What do you think about Government proposals to double the size of Yarl's Wood?
After what we've been through in Bedfordshire with the riot and fire five years ago, I'd rather the facilities were built somewhere else.
Fair enough, we have got to house failed asylum seekers somewhere.
It's a recipe for disaster housing foreign criminals with immigrants who have outstayed their visas and others going through the fast-track immigration process.
