Court hears Shamas Uddin held at least seven undeclared bank accounts.

A man has started an eight-month jail sentence after admitting benefit frauds totalling £22,970.

Bedford magistrates heard that Shamas Uddin, of Aspley Road, Bedford, first claimed housing and council tax benefit in March 1997 and continued for nearly ten years until January 2007.

But an investigation by Bedford Borough Council established that he held at least seven bank accounts which he had not declared, and his savings peaked in January 2007 with funds in excess of £27,000.

A decision was made that Uddin was not entitled to benefit from April 2002.

Uddin pleaded guilty to 11 charges on February 28, and was sentenced at Luton Crown Court on April 18.

Judge Gareth Davies said: "It began when you were legitimately entitled and you saw the opportunity to take matters into a dishonest area."

What do you think about Government proposals to double the size of Yarl's Wood?
After what we've been through in Bedfordshire with the riot and fire five years ago, I'd rather the facilities were built somewhere else.
Fair enough, we have got to house failed asylum seekers somewhere.
It's a recipe for disaster housing foreign criminals with immigrants who have outstayed their visas and others going through the fast-track immigration process.
