Signs point to shooting of new film at Cardington airship sheds

Do not let them drive you batty with confusion – the signs are the Caped Crusader is back in Bedfordshire.

They may be the sort of misleading monikers planted by the Riddler to sow confusion among the righteous, but a clutch of sneaky signposts pointing the way to the Cardington airship sheds are the evidence Batman is being filmed again in the area.

The signs, which bear the letters RFK, direct traffic off the southern bypass through Shortstown and towards Shed Number Two, where the latest flick featuring Gotham City's black-clad defender is before the cameras.

It is believed the initials stand for Rory's First Kiss, the phoney name adopted by the makers of The Dark Knight – sequel to 2005's Batman Begins – in a bid to deter over-zealous fans.

According to reports, Rory is the name of director Christopher Nolan's son, and RFK signs have already been used during summer filming in Chicago.

It is believed the secrecy-shrouded shoot at Cardington involves the massive Gotham City set built in the rear of the shed for the earlier movie and left standing afterwards.

The Times & Citizen understands dog-handlers have come over from the USA for one sequence, thought to involve a chase featuring the Batmobile.

Filming of Batman's car has already cost one special effects technician his life after an accident last month, reportedly at a property near Chertsey, Surrey.

The crewman was in a camera truck following another vehicle in a test run-through when it struck a tree.

Christian Bale is pulling on the rubber suit again as Batman for the latest adventure. Heart-throb Heath Ledger plays the Joker and Michael Caine reprises his role as Alfred the butler.

Batman Begins was also partly made at Cardington and featured extras cast after open auditions held at The Place theatre in Bedford.

It too was shot under a cover name – The Intimidation Game – which even featured on planning documents submitted to the borough council before the cameras rolled.

The RFK signs previously appeared in Shortstown for a brief period in May, during apparent preparation work for the current filming.

Today's Vote

What did you think of Proms In The Park?
Another triumph, possibly the best yet.
I liked the local singers Irene Grant and Bedford Choral Society.
It's not really my scene.
The best thing about it is the fireworks and lasers
