New speaker, new deputy speaker, new Deputy Mayor
A new speaker has been elected at Bedford Borough Council.

Coun Anita Gerard (Lib Dem, Kingsbrook) took up the role at the meeting of the council on Wednesday, May 14, following her 12-month stint as deputy speaker.

She succeeded Coun Randolph Charles (Lab, Cauldwell), whose last official duty as speaker was to introduce the Pride In Bedford Awards, which were hosted by the Times & Citizen and Bedford Borough Council.

Coun Bob Harrison (Con, Great Barford) was elected unopposed as deputy speaker.

Mayor Frank Branston also announced that Coun Ian Clifton (Independent, Riseley) would be replaced as Deputy Mayor by Conservative group leader Nicky Attenborough.

The Mayor's cabinet was otherwise unchanged.

Today's Vote

What did you think of Proms In The Park?
Another triumph, possibly the best yet.
I liked the local singers Irene Grant and Bedford Choral Society.
It's not really my scene.
The best thing about it is the fireworks and lasers
