Plans for a converted town centre shop are shrouded in secrecy as even the town's top brass don't know what it is going to be.
Workmen have been busy inside the former HMV store in Silver Street in recent weeks.
But when the Times & Citizen asked Bedford Borough Council, Bedford BID and the council's land and property service Invest In Bedford none of them knew what was being planned for the store.
Conservative councillor Tom Wootton claimed that this was indicative of deep-seated problems with the council's town centre planning strategy.
He said: "There is something worrying going on and I don't know what it is.
"As a group we are very worried about the town centre and have been worried for some time.
"I asked the mayor for answers at the last full council meeting and he roared at me.
"It's not like it's a back street shopping centre. It's the heart of the town."
