Haul of coins stolen by duo

Robbers got away with several hundred pounds when they ambushed a security van driver delivering cash to a supermarket in Stopsley on Monday.

The driver had parked his van on the pavement in Hitchin Road and was walking towards the Somerfield supermarket when the robbery happened, at about 11.15am.

Two men ran at the victim, knocking him to the ground and stealing the bag of change he had been holding, which police say contained several hundred pounds' worth of coins.

They then ran across the road to a waiting silver Ford Focus and drove off. The car, which had been stolen earlier that morning from Vestry Close, in the centre of Luton, was later found abandoned in nearby Hallwicks Close.

A Luton man was later arrested in connection with the robbery.

A police spokesman said: 'We believe there were at least three people in this vehicle. They were all wearing some sort of face covering so there are no descriptions of them.

'We have arrested one man and he has been bailed pending further enquiries.'

The security guard was left shaken but uninjured, and police are now appealing for any witnesses to the robbery and the events before and after it to contact them.

The spokesman continued: 'Anyone who saw the car being stolen, someone acting suspiciously outside Somerfield prior to the robbery, or the car being abandoned in Hallwicks Road should call Det Con Barry Townsend at Luton CID on 01582 394262.'
