Rain fails to dampen party spirit

A technical hiccup and several rain showers didn't stop thousands of music and dance fans turning out for the Luton Mela on August 3.

The organisers of the festival say about 10,000 people braved the downpours to enjoy the best in Asian music and culture, from rap through to bhangra.

The headline act was top urban singer and producer Hunterz. Visitors were also treated to dance displays, children's activities and food and craft stalls.

Things got off to a shaky start when the generator powering the main stage broke down in the morning, but using the smaller marquee stage the organisers managed to get everyone on, and a new generator arrived at 3pm.

Luton Mela Group secretary Ricardo Garcia said: 'We had a big increase on the numbers from last year - at one point there must have been four or five thousand people at the main stage. When Hunterz came on the crowd went wild.'

Pictures of all the action from the Mela will be in the Wednesday, August 6 edition of The Luton News, available from all good newsagents.
