A rottweiler has landed itself in a huge heap of trouble this week after it attacked a female police officer in Luton.

The mauling happened on Monday morning after police were called to a domestic dispute in Compton Avenue.

A 17-year-old was arrested at around 12.30am on suspicion of disturbing the peace and obstructing an officer and detained in custody.

The dog attack happened when police returned to take a statement from the youth's mother.

A police spokeswoman told this website: 'Officers were called to an address where there was a domestic between a mother and her 17-year-old son.

'At that point the dog was in its cage. It was on returning to the property that somehow the dog got out of its cage and bit a female police officer.

'The officer did go home, but the injuries aren't going to be threatening."

Asked about the fate of the offending dog, she said: 'The dog has been detained for evidential purposes.'

Officers are now examining the case to determine whether the Dangerous Dog Act can be invoked.

The first call about the disturbance came into police shortly after 12.30am.

The teenager has been referred to the youth offending team.
